Getting Started
How do I get started with a project?
- You can reach out to us with or without a specific idea in mind. Fill out our contact form to start a conversation and tell us a little about what you're envisioning.
What information should I provide when I first contact you?
- Look through our past projects and tell us a little about what you like or don't like. Information about the area you're planning to build in, terrain features, intended users, and any ideas you already have can help us get on the same page more quickly. Anything you think may be helpful is worth sharing.
Do you offer site visits or consultations?
- Absolutely. We offer site visits and consultations when they are needed before construction. Typically, our goal is to complete some initial design work and develop rough estimates before the site visit, allowing us to use that visit to work through the final details and move toward a contract and deposit.
Do you work with clients who aren't sure exactly what they want yet?
- Absolutely. Many clients aren't sure exactly what they want when they first reach out. There are a lot of factors and options to consider, and we can help you explore those possibilities and figure out what works best for your space and your goals. Reach out and let's see how we can build you an adventure.
How far do you travel for projects?
- We currently travel anywhere in the United States and would love to discuss projects abroad as well. Our projects have been primarily along the East Coast so far, but we're always looking for new places to build and new adventures to create.
Design & Customization
Are your projects completely custom-designed?
- Most of our projects are custom-designed using a selection of pieces and features we offer. This approach helps reduce costs and project timelines while still allowing every project to have its own custom features and personality. We can also build completely custom projects when the site, design, and project requirements allow for it.
Can I provide inspiration photos or ideas from other projects?
- Absolutely. The more inspiration you have from things you like, the better we can understand what you want for your adventure. You can send us pictures from our projects, other projects, Pinterest, or anywhere else you'd like to draw inspiration from.
Can you help me decide what features would work best for my space?
- We can, and we do. Sometimes a dream feature isn't completely compatible with the site's requirements or other project constraints. We can work with you to find the best balance between what you envision and what works realistically for your space.
Can existing trees, terrain, or other site features be incorporated into a design?
- They can, and they usually are. One of the advantages of custom design is being able to work with existing trees, terrain, and other site features rather than changing them to meet the needs of the structure.
Do you provide engineering for your projects?
- When a project requires formal engineering, we can incorporate those services into the project to meet specific structural, site, or permitting requirements. We identify those needs during the design process and account for them in the project scope and budget.
Can you modify a design after the initial concept?
- Yes. Design modifications are a normal part of many projects, and we remain flexible as the project develops. Changes can often be accommodated up until installation, and if something needs to change during construction, we'll talk through the options with you and work to accommodate the project as much as possible.
Pricing & Payments
How do you determine the cost of a project?
- Project cost depends on many factors, including size, location, site access, materials, features, and timeline. Once we understand your specific ideas and site, we can help determine the best approach for your project.
What factors have the biggest impact on project cost?
- Size and location or site access tend to have some of the biggest impacts on cost. A larger project naturally requires more materials and labor, while difficult access can add significant time if materials and equipment have to be carried long distances or moved through challenging terrain.
Is there a design or consultation fee?
- There is no design or consultation fee for the initial project conversation. Site visits or in-person meetings may have a fee depending on travel time and location. When applicable, we like to apply that fee toward the project deposit if a contract is signed.
How do your milestone payments work?
- Milestone payments are based on predetermined points in the project that are agreed upon before construction begins. Each project and client is different, so we establish a payment schedule that works for the scope of the project and provides clear expectations throughout the process.
When are payments due during a project?
- Payment timing depends on the project and the payment structure established in the contract. Most of our projects are completed within 30 days on site, so milestone-based projects typically have payments due within 7 days of an invoice, while projects using a completion-based structure may allow up to 30 days. The specific schedule is established on a project-by-project basis.
Timeline & Construction
How long does a typical project take from start to finish?
- Residential projects can take approximately 2 to 12 months from initial planning through completion, while commercial projects can take approximately 4 to 12 months. Timelines depend on the project's scope, design, permitting, scheduling, and other project requirements.
How far in advance should I plan my project?
- Ideally, project planning should begin at least 4 to 6 months before your desired completion date. This also depends on our current schedule and availability for new projects. If you're considering an adventure for your property, it's never too early to reach out and start the conversation.
How much time is spent designing and preparing before construction begins?
- This depends entirely on the project, design, permitting requirements, and client needs. Some projects can be designed and prepared within a few weeks, while larger or more complex projects may require months of design, planning, and coordination before construction begins.
Do you build projects off-site or on location?
- We use a combination of both approaches. We complete significant material preparation and as much prefabrication as practical at our shop to help reduce costs and time on site. Because every project is unique and we work with natural and custom materials, a significant portion of the construction is also completed on location.
How long will your crew typically be at my property?
- This depends on the size and complexity of the project. Residential projects are typically 1 to 3 weeks on site, while commercial projects are typically 4 to 8 weeks.
What happens if site conditions are different from what was expected?
- We understand that site conditions can change or reveal unexpected challenges. When potential conditions are identified during the planning process, we'll discuss them with you and establish a plan for how they may be handled. If conditions require a change to the contracted scope or price, we'll discuss the situation with you thoroughly before making any changes.
Materials & Craftsmanship
What materials do you use for your projects?
- We primarily use Black Locust logs for our natural structural elements, pressure-treated dimensional lumber where appropriate, and galvanized marine-grade hardware. We also use UV-rated, wear-resistant ropes and netting where appropriate. Material selection depends on the specific project, design, and intended use.
What are Black Locust Logs?
- Black Locust is a naturally rot-resistant hardwood that provides an excellent option for outdoor structures and long-term use. Its durability allows us to build with natural materials while creating structures designed for long service lives. Every log is also unique, giving each project an extra bit of character and personality.
How do you design projects to withstand outdoor weather and use?
- Black Locust gives us a naturally rot-resistant foundation for our builds. When using pressure-treated lumber, we incorporate proper drainage and keep lumber away from direct ground contact to help prolong its service life. We also dry and stain our wood with a weather-resistant stain to help reduce checking, warping, and weathering over time.
Can you incorporate reclaimed or existing materials into a project?
- We can, and we do. If you have something you think could be useful in your project, let us know during the design process and we'll discuss whether it would be a good fit for your adventure.
Safety, Permits & Inspections
Do you handle permits and inspections?
- We handle permitting when it is required for the project. After discussing your project and site requirements, we'll identify the applicable permitting requirements and coordinate the necessary steps. We also perform a final inspection after construction is complete and provide the inspection report to the client for their ongoing records.
How do you approach safety in your designs?
- Safety is considered throughout the design, fabrication, and installation of every project. We apply established safety practices and standards from across the industry while considering the intended users, site conditions, materials, layout, and individual features of each adventure. Our goal is to create something that is exciting and challenging while remaining thoughtfully designed for its intended use.
Do you offer inspections and safety evaluations after a project is completed?
- We perform a final inspection and evaluation after construction is complete and provide the report to the client for their ongoing records. For structures that require ongoing inspections, we can also provide recurring inspections on an appropriate schedule.
Do you provide maintenance and repairs for existing playgrounds and adventure structures?
- Maintenance and repair work is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If you have an existing playground or adventure structure that needs attention, fill out our contact form and tell us about the structure, its location, and what you think needs to be addressed. We'll review the information and discuss how we may be able to help.
